And rather than the critters crooning a handful of racy Peggy Lee songs,
they’re now warbling full-scale Broadway-bound show tunes, seemingly written
by an escapee from the Stephen Sondheim Institute.

This straight-to-video sequel nails its predecessor’s class allegory but
fails to justify itself as more than another shameless Disney attempt to
franchise its way into the hearts and subconsciousnesses of toddlers. But is
there a lesson to be absorbed? Suburban malaise.
Scamp, L&T’s only son, is a rambunctious pup, disgusted with how easy he
has it. He runs off and meets Buster (voice of Chazz Palminteri), a junkyard
dog, who fills Scamp in on Tramp’s delinquent youth. Aware that rebellion and
thug life race through his bloodline, Scamp is determined to become a
hellhound.
An R-rated version would be subtitled “My Life as a Dawg” and would feature
the stylings of Dr. Dre. The G-rated tale offers the voice-over talents of
Scott Wolf and Alyssa Milano, as the homeless girl-power pup ashamed that
Scamp has forsaken his middle-class self.
Lost in all this is Scamp’s mother, who frets on the margins. That might be
the way to make a disposable sequel, but it’s no way to treat a Lady.
