In 1942, Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby teamed up at Der Bingle’s Paramount Pictures for Holiday Inn, a black-and-white musical that proves more entertaining than Crosby’s color semi-remake White Christmas in 1954. Astaire and Crosby play partner/rival song-and-dance men who compete for the hand of their performing partner, played by Virginia Dale. After Crosby loses, he moves to the Connecticut countryside where he creates a resort that is only open on holidays and puts on the shows with the help of Marjorie Reynolds. Dumped by Dale, Astaire makes a drunken arrival at the inn on New Year’s Eve and dances with Reynolds. He decides she’ll be his new partner, but doesn’t remember what she looks like, setting off a frenzied search at every subsequnt show while the once-bitten Crosby does his best to steer him off track. The theme gives Irving Berlin an excuse to craft or recycle a number of holiday-themed songs, such as (in the former category) “Washington’s Birthday” or (in the latter) “Easter Parade.” The most famous of the new material, of course, is “White Christmas,” which became one of the bestselling songs of all time and the title song of Crosby’s 1954 film. Astaire and Crosby also team up for “I’ll Capture Her Heart,” which playfully contrasts the stars’ specialties, and Astaire’s “It’s So Easy to Dance with You” became one of the signature songs of his post-Ginger Rogers career. Astaire and Crosby teamed up again for Blu Skies in 1946. –David Horiuchi

If you haven’t heard of the movie, here’s a quick plot:
Murray Lerner’s film “Festival” is a cinematic synthesis of four Newport Folk Festivals in which the art of folk music is pictured in transition during its most crucial years. The range is from Bob Dylan performing “Tambourine Man” and Joan Baez doing “Farewell Angelina,” to country artists like Johnny Cash playing “I Walk the Line” to the Georgia Sea Island Singers. The range is also from the high-priced professionals like Peter, Paul, and Mary to the authentic folk dignity of living legends such as Son House and Mississippi John Hurt. Joan Baez, Donovan and Judy Collins are all on view, as are Pete Seeger, the Ed Young Fife and Drum Corps and numerous others that give a feeling of community with the whole American present, and continuity with the American past. Indeed, the long-haired Newport audiences pictured sleeping on beaches and on the grounds, in sports cars and battered station wagons, plunking banjoes and guitars, swapping tunes between formal concerts, and talking about folk music, seem not a rupture with the American past, but an expression of carrying forward an American idealism and social concern.

I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown might otherwise be called “Peanuts: The Next Generation” for its sprightly emphasis on Linus and Lucy’s younger brother, Rerun, and his qust to be worthy of a pet pooch. Like a, well, dog with a bone, Rerun is intent on forging a happy friendship with a canine as cool as Charlie Brown’s Snoopy–in fact, he keeps coming around to see if Snoopy wants to play. (Of course, Snoopy’s idea of playing is making Rerun his co-pilot in the imaginary cockpit of his imaginary World War I bomber.) This holiday season television special is not the wise, enduring classic that is 1965’s A Charlie Brown Christmas, but it is charming and sweet, particularly when Snoopy’s brother, the desert-dwelling Spike, comes to stay. Schroeder fans will enjoy the usual shtick between love-struck Lucy and the piano genius’ detachment. –Tom Keogh
